AurukunAurukun is situated approximately 100 km south of Weipa in far north Queensland. The town faces west to the Gulf of Carpentaria and is a 25 minute flight from Weipa and nearly a 2 hour flight from Cairns. By road, it is approximately 12 hours from Cairns. In the wet season, the roads are impassable.It is one of the larger communities in the Cape with approximately 1200 people. Aurukun was established as as a Presbyterian mission in 1904. There are many services provided in the community including medical facilities, education, churches, shops, banking, leisure/sporting facilities and a police station. Although CAPE PCYC is not currently operating in this area, it is proposed that the CAPE PCYC model will be implemented in the near future.
